LBNY Singles: The Return of Ti
THE FORECAST called for a hot and humid day, and an off-chance of late showers, which never came. Instead “Ti” stormed in. With a retooled pointing game and the usual barrage of shots, he outlasted everyone to take the club Singles title against Xavier.
A record 42 players showed up at Bryant Park. There were many new faces. And all the usual suspects were there: Ti, Xavier, JPS, Eric, Gilles, Steve, and Charles, the defending champion. Only 16 qualified to the next championship rounds, leaving a few of the contenders on the sideline. Watching from the outside were Steve, Ernesto, Lucien, Christophe, Mo, and Loi.
Xavier breezed through his first knockout game but had to pull it out against the defending champ, Charles, after being down 8-12. He outlasted JPS to meet in the final Ti, who met his toughest match before that in Yngve during the 1/16 final. After he took care of Jeannot and Gilles to set up a classic final.
A carreau for 2 point by Xavier was wiped out when the bouchon got taken out along with the boule. Soon Ti took a 5 points to none lead on the strength of his new pointing style. Xavier came back to tie it 5-5, fell behind again. At 11-10, Ti’s carreau with his last boule took the bouchon out, with Xavier having a boule left. Score tied 11-11. The last frame came down to better pointing, 13-11. Ti is the LBNY’s Singles Champion.
The scoring line: 0-0, 1-0, 2-0, 5-0, 5-1, 5-3, 5-4, 5-5, 6-5, 7-5, 8-5, 8-6, 9-6, 9-7, 11-7, 11-8, 11-9, 11-10, 11-11, 13-11.
