LA BOULE NEW YORKAISE (LBNY) is the oldest and largest pétanque club in New York City and one of the most storied clubs in the United States. Founded in 1968 by the artist Alfred Levitt, the club has grown steadily from the early days of playing on the gravel paths in Central Park near 106th Street to the permanent courts in Washington Square Park and the expansion into beautiful Bryant Park, where we hold most of our tournaments and teach petanque daily. Our members make up the diverse population that is the city.
Our club is dedicated to promoting pétanque as a fun and recreational activity, as well as a competitive sport.
We are affiliated with the Federation of Pétanque USA, Inc. (FPUSA), the national federation, which is a member of the Federation International de Pétanque et Jeu Provençal (FIPJP), the 70+ nation international governing body based in France.
During the playing season (April to November), we holds tournaments about once a month—some random “melees”, some formed “select” and some major Opens—usually in Bryant Park. Otherwise you can find us just playing in there on the weekends. We give free pétanque lessons every weekday 11am to 6pm at Bryant Park.
At more than 100 members, we are a varied, ecletic bunch living mostly in the Tri-State area, with a few members from other states and even overseas.
