2006 World Championships

The World Championships of Pétanque were held in Grenbole, September 20-24. France 1 took first place, having beaten, in succession, Belgium, France 2 (then defending world champions), Italy, and, finally, Tunisia. Michel Loy, Pascal Milei, Sylvain Dubrueil, and Didier Chagneau are the 2006 world champions, Loy for the third time.

Team USA — Hans, Ti, Alec, and Louis Toulon — started well, winning three of the first four games: defeating Guinée (the only team in the group to do so), Belarus, and Singapore, but losing to Algeria (which would go on to the semi-finals). The team then lost to Ireland, Sweden, and Sénégal — all games they should have won. Having failed to advance, the Americans then lost two to Malaysia in the first round of the consolation, the Coupe des Nations.
