Malek & Khaled Win the 2015 NY International

Malek Hfaiedh and Khaled Bougriba Win the 2015 NY International against Philippe Menier and Tommy Morasse.

40 teams competed in the 2015 edition of the New York International Open tournament co-hosted by La Boule New Yorkaise and New York Petanque Club. Players from Tunisia, Germany, Canada, France, and Belgium joined teams from various parts of the U.S. in what was arguably the most competitive petanque tournament in the U.S. Four world champions and various national team members participated, including Dylan Rocher, Damien Hureau, Claudy Weibel, and “Tichon”.

After 4 qualifying games on Saturday, 8 teams advanced to the 1/8 final on Sunday; the next ranked teams (9-24) played a single-elimination match to finalize that top 16.

Malek and Khaled beat Artem Zuev and Neil Bastian in the 1/8; beat Claudy Weibel and Mark Greenberg in the 1/4; and beat Dylan Rocher and JP Subrenat in the semifinals.

Philipe and and Tommy beat Sebastien Dulmaine and Vivien Virgili in the 1/8; beat Yann-Matthieu Pouplot and Santatra Ravelojaona in the 1/4; and Damien Hureau and Claude Vallois in the semifinals.

Both semifinals were spectacular games, ending in 13-12. In the finals Malek and Khaled took an early lead 7-2 only to lose it with Tommy pointing expertly. The mommentum went back and forth, Malek having to save the game with a magic boule. Tommy and Philippe had a chance to win if only they could move the bouchon to the back. They could not do it.

The final score for Malek and Khaled was 13-10. Congratulations champions!
